During the process of a divorce in Columbus, Hilliard, Upper Arlington and the surrounding areas many spouses want to know if there will be spousal support that should be paid from one ex-spouse to another. This used to be commonly referred to as “alimony.” There are presently no guidelines established by Ohio law that govern the determination of either the amount or duration of spousal support. Whether Spousal support may be available or appropriate is based upon many factors, including the length of the marriage, the parties’ ages, the parties’ incomes, the mental and physical health of the parties, and the assets distributed to the parties. In disputed matters, the court will also give consideration to whether one spouse gave up employment or employment opportunities to support the other and care for the couple’s children, or if one spouse paid for or supported the education of another.
